Three Wheel Studio

Brightly Embellished Stoneware Pottery

Now you can buy Three Wheel Studio in our online shop!

Based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Dwo Wen Chen is the potter behind Three Wheel Studio. Born in Taiwan and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he uses hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques to create his beautifully formed stoneware pieces. His work features carefully hand-painted layers of intensely colored glazes. The contrast between the glazing and the natural clay background is a signature of Three Wheel Studio pottery.
We're currently featuring Chen's classic selection of stoneware embellished with maple and ginkgo leaves and ferns as well as his exuberant collection of colorful bird imagery.

Says Chen, "I really don't have a set idea of what my ceramic work should be.  I have an idea first, get inspired, say by scenery, an animal sitting in a certain way, by a bird that I see flying in a certain way, by some cartoon, Japanese animations, certain faces...  And since I'm in the ceramic pottery making business, every time I see something that just a little bit triggers my interest, my immediate thought is, How do I apply it to ceramic work, how do I make it interesting and functional?"

Chen continues, “I most aspire to recreate the familiar and the useful, taking reference from our immediate environment, expressing and highlighting contemporary urban tastes is a theme in all my creations. At the same time, I want there to be an earthiness to the shape and texture of my work that allows the fondness of the handcrafted to come through. Most importantly, I hope my pottery reflects the love and enthusiasm I feel during its creation.”

Each piece of Three Wheel Studio pottery handmade and one of a kind.  They are finished with a clear, food-safe glaze and can go in the dishwasher and microwave.
