Motawi Tileworks

Arts & Crafts tiles from Ann Arbor, MI

Run by brother and sister team Nawal and Karim Motawi, Motawi Tileworks opened in 1992. They became obsessed with handmade tiles while working at a pottery studio and were compelled to make their own handmade tiles. Influenced by the decorative style of the Arts and Crafts movement, they take inspiration from Pewabic, Rookwood, and Grueby as well as architects such as Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright.

We couldn't be more in love with the new tiles Motawi has come up with based on the designs of Charley Harper. Just in at PINCH: the squirrel, owl and koala bear designs.

Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the artisans at Motawi have an obsessive interest in improving their skills pressing, glazing, and mold-making. The studio uses locally produced clay and glazes mixed on-site to their own specifications. Combining turn of the century aesthetics with contemporary business practices, Motawi has developed into one of the great potteries of the twenty-first century.
