Michael Lambert Ceramics

Functional Ceramic Art
Santa Cruz, California

It’s impossible not to smile when you see Michael Lambert’s whimsical work. His stylized coffee pots, sugar bowls and creamers have a panache that makes them appear capable of a decided strut across the table if they so desired.

Michael Lambert discovered ceramics when he decided to leave graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley. After taking pottery classes and running an arts program, Michael moved to Santa Cruz, in 1976, to open his own studio. He developed the distinctive style that characterizes his work, thinking that the pieces (then much larger) would be works of art, not functional objects.

According to Michael, “Although I make work which is often displayed on gallery pedestals or dining room sideboards, it is essential for me to be able to imagine my pieces in use – How would it feel sipping Grand Marnier out of a liqueur cup on a special occasion with special friends?”

Michael Lambert’s work evolved into what we know now, tea or coffee pots, sugar bowls, creamers, mugs, salt and pepper shakers and vases. Each piece is carefully assembled from individually cast parts, and visitors to pinch often exclaim with delight as they walk by the parade of Michael’s anthropomorphic ceramics with attitude.

Michael Lambert’s uses the following glazes: black, white, celadon, pastel, dark green, moss, cranberry and yellow, but not all pieces come in all glazes. Prices range from $34 for a mug, to $260 for the Struttin’ tea set. Please contact pinch for pricing and glaze color options on specific pieces, which can be drop-shipped by the artist.
