Art Nouveau Ceramic tiles
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Brother and sister Nawal and Karim Motawi become obsessed with handmade tile while working at an arts and crafts pottery studio and were compelled to make their own handmade tiles. Nawal Motawi studied sculpture and ceramics at the University of Michigan and learned tile making at Pewabic Pottery. Karim Motawi runs the production studio and teaches tile-making classes.

Motawi Tiles are made in their Ann Arbor, MI Studio using locally produced clay and glazes mixed on site to their own specifications. Their aesthetic influences include early 20th Century decorative artists such as Mary Chase Stratton, Adelaide Robineau, Louis Sullivan, C.F. Voysey, William DeMorgan and Dard Hunter.

According to Karim Motawi, “Motawi tile has a warm rustic charm that is impossible to achieve with mass production. So we make our tile the old fashioned way.”

Prices range from $32 for a 4”x4” tile to $350 for a set of three 6”x6” tiles in an oak frame by Dard Hunter Studios. Please contact pinch for pricing on a specific piece.
