Nicholas Bernard
Ceramic ArtistScottsdale, Arizona
The striking part of Nicholas Bernard’s work is its form and texture. According to Nicholas, “This current body of work deals with classical forms and their manipulation. Specific attention is paid to proportion. The length of, and thickness of the neck, the placement, size and negative space generated by the handles. The addition of texture using heavy slip after throwing and the application of colored slips and oxides through several firings complete the process.”
Nicholas Bernard’s pieces start with heavily gauged white earthenware clay. The pieces are sometimes stretched, cut and reassembled while wet. Decoration may also begin at the leather-hard stage, with the application of slips using ceramic stains or oxides as colorants. Other pieces are bisque fired and then decorated. Layers of colored slips are added and manipulated through several firings to achieve color and texture. All pieces are fired in oxidation to Cone 3 or 2000 degrees.
