Sarah Ahearn

Paintings, prints, mirrors and “little houses”
Ithaca, New York

In Sarah’s words, “Creating art is an essential aspect of who I am, and painting is the way in which I interpret the varied images and emotions of everyday life. I have been painting and exhibiting my work throughout the Northeast since graduating from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1999.

My paintings, inspired by lines of poetry, excerpts of maps, and bits of ephemera, recall memories of actual and imagined travels. I continue to be inspired by my immediate surroundings, while my travels to experience the art and culture of Mexico and France have had a tremendous impact on my painting and still inspire my work today. I see my work as a developing exploration of the physical world around me and the delicate landscapes of human emotion. Nonetheless, it is also playful and spontaneous. My imagination has long been engaged beyond the familiar contexts of " home"; for this reason, I frequently incorporate map fragments of distant lands, sans familiar reference points, to evoke the placelessness of daydreams and flights of fancy. I find inspiration in the small, simple details of everyday life and language. It is these images that often emerge in my paintings, sometimes as recognizable forms on the canvas, other times veiled behind color and abstract pattern. Through each painting, I continue to discover and grow as an artist.”
