word for word:
a conversation between two artists who love the printed word and image

Please join us on Friday,
February 12th, from 6 to 9 pm for a reception featuring the work of local artists Joyce Rosenfeld and Sarah Ahearn in conjunction with Northampton's Arts Night Out.

Altered found and rescued books, folded into sculpture, are Joyce Rosenfeld's tribute to the power and mystery of books. Sarah Ahearn's mixed media paintings, layered with fragments of text, maps and assorted ephemera, reflect her love of books & words.

Both artists will be at pinch to discuss their work, and words, and books. Refreshments will be served!

Ellen Grenadier Pottery Opening

In conjunction with Northampton's Arts Night Out on Friday, October 9th from 5 until 9 pm, pinch will be hosting an opening for our forthcoming show of Berkshire potter Ellen Grenadier's work.  Please join us to celebrate Ellen's beautiful pottery with wine and refreshments.

Ellen Grenadier has been making tableware, custom tiles, and murals for over 30 years. Ten years ago, she moved her studio and gallery to the Berkshires. Her current work is stoneware that incorporates impressions of leaves in elegant bowls, plates, sushi platters, dinnerware, tea service, vases and more, all glazed with natural cobalt blues, copper greens and ambers made from iron. Her work is a stylish blend of well crafted refined form and rich surfaces that are alive with subtle texture and colors.

Abby Rieser Artist's Statement

A 1983 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in metalwork and surface design, I have served since 2003 as a Gatekeeper, managing the recycling center in Northampton, Mass. Over the years I have accumulated innumerable found objects which now form a vast library of materials I draw from for my sculptural pieces. Although the materials I use in my assemblages are quite diverse, they share in common a beautiful patina, soft edges, and worn surfaces. My current work incorporates the influences of Joseph Cornell and my lifelong mentor Varujan Boghosian. I maintain my studio in Northampton.

Nan Fleming Artist’s Statement

I discovered metal as an art form while at UMASS in 1992 when taking a
welding class on a whim. Always a hoarder of the discarded and used, I
was drawn to the shapes and patinas of the broken farm equipment and
rusted gears rather than the shiny sheets of new metal available in the
foundry. Manipulating a shape with heat continues to be pure magic for
me.

I combine these worn metal elements with other materials such as wood,
paper, clay and small found objects to create both functional and purely
sculptural pieces. Usually a single shape will suggest a gesture or the
beginning of an idea. I tend to work on 2 or 3 pieces at the same time,
solving problems and sometime waiting for months to realize the final
detail needed to complete a sculpture.
